On Dance in our Community

The question we pose to Design Brigade:

Design Brigade students will design and fabricate an exhibition for the New Haven Dance History Project, an initiative spearheaded by the Yale Dance Lab that includes a diverse cross-section of the city's dance community. Students will be asked to build upon the project's research to conceptualize a multi-site exhibit to be launched in 2023. Students will carry out research, community engagement, client design presentations, and the fabrication of exhibition components.

The project as conceived by Design Brigade:

This summer, Design Brigade students designed an exhibition called Speaking Dance in response to the emotional joy, collectivity, & innovation of the New Haven dance community.

Speaking Dance is the culmination of 33 oral history interviews conducted by the New Haven Dance Project. As an installation of moving images, it represents dance spaces integral to New Haven’s dance history: the studio, the institutional stage, and the communal dance scene.

Oral histories accompany archival and original footage gathered from New Haven dances still active today to create a playful, interactive installation.
